"The key was Wang," said Tino Martinez, who homered for the fourth consecutive game. "We gave him a couple of runs to help him out there and gave him a chance to win the game." 

Wang allowed two runs on just four hits over 7 1/3 innings, earning his first Major League victory. Martinez, John Flaherty and Robinson Cano each contributed a pair of RBIs, as the Yankees won for the fourth time in five games on their homestand.

The Mariners jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Wang, scoring runs in each of the first two innings. The first came when Ichiro Suzuki led off the game with a triple, scoring on an RBI groundout by Randy Winn. Wilson Valdez singled in the second run, and it looked as though it could be a long day for the rookie right-hander.

But Wang made an adjustment in his mechanics, resulting in better location. He settled in after the second, retiring 10 of 11 batters through the fifth inning. Seattle put a pair of runners on in the sixth, but Wang struck out Jeremy Reed to strand them.

"He was struggling the first two innings, then all of a sudden he was a different guy out there until the end," Flaherty said. "Somehow he found it, which was good. He's been as relaxed as I've seen any young pitcher in this environment."

"He was very loose," said manager Joe Torre. "He has great movement on the ball, and a lot of late movement, which means that it's really tough to stop a swing once you commit." 

"Let's just keep him going," Torre said. "Right now, he's focused really well."

Mariano Rivera picked up his fifth save of the season, pitching a scoreless ninth inning to seal Wang's first win.

"He's gone out and performed very well," Flaherty said of Wang. 
"He's a breath of fresh air for us, a young arm who has stepped up for us."
